Valor Hospitality launches sustainability strategy for UK hotels

Valor Hospitality is set to roll out a new sustainability strategy across 40 hotels across its UK portfolio, commencing with a pledge to secure Green Key certification for the properties.

The strategy will focus on environmental impact, stakeholder engagement, biodiversity, and energy, water, and waste management. It also covers food and beverage operations and compliance.

The hospitality group previously secured the eco-certification for the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park hotel, which opened in March last year.

Foundation for Environmental Education operates the international certification scheme, which environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Scotland Beautiful manage in England and Scotland.

The strategy follows global tourism trends, with 80% of travellers stating that sustainable travel is important. The company will also use the initiative to develop its workplace culture.

President of Valor Hospitality UK and Europe, Brian McCarthy, said: “This marks an important step for our team at Valor and reflects our continued focus on ESG initiatives across the business.

“We see Green Key certification as an important benchmark for demonstrating our commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the wellbeing of our team members.”

Green Key England manager, Louise Carr-Merino, added: “We are delighted that Valor Hospitality has chosen to work towards Green Key to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable operations and environmentally responsible management in their hotels. As part of an evolving ESG strategy, Valor has set an ambitious target for all hotels in their UK portfolio to achieve Green Key certification in 2026.

“During the application process, each hotel will go through an on-site assessment conducted by an independent auditor to verify compliance with the robust Green Key standards and imperative requirements. We look forward to receiving the applications and reviewing the submissions as the group continues its sustainability journey.”

News Analysis

Valor Hospitality’s commitment to securing Green Key certification for 40 hotels marks an operational pivot in its environmental strategy. This mirrors past efforts like the company’s earlier eco-certification of the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park hotel in March 2022, demonstrating a consistent trend in aligning business objectives with sustainability targets following the appointment of its first energy manager.

Historically, Valor has aimed to weave sustainability into its operations—a narrative also echoed by other industry players. For example, Village Hotels introduced their own ESG strategy last year, prioritising similar pillars of environmental and social responsibility in a bid to solidify their green credentials. Valor’s current strategy continues this trend, signalling an expectation that sustainable practices are integral to a modern hospitality brand.

As Valor seeks to enhance workplace culture through sustainability, its growth trajectory—which saw the UK portfolio expand from 17 to 40 hotels—suggests that operational efficiency often fuels such initiatives that may also appeal to contemporary consumer values. The strategic emphasis on eco-certification could represent not just compliance but a lever for future profitability within a competitive market landscape.
