Royal Maritime Hotel in Portsmouth joins BWH Hotels portfolio

The Royal Maritime Hotel in Portsmouth has officially joined BWH Hotels GB as part of the BW Signature Collection.

News of the partnership comes as the group expands its corporate travel and events portfolio. By joining BWH Hotels GB, the hotel will access global distribution, corporate sales channels and the planners advantage loyalty programme.

The partnership is expected to increase midweek occupancy and higher-rated contracted business.

The 90-bedroom hotel is one of Portsmouth’s most historic venues for conferences, group stays and events. Founded in 1850, the hotel operates as a charitable incorporated organisation, reinvesting surpluses to support serving and veteran members of HM Armed Forces.

Located near the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the hotel aims to capture regional and national corporate demand. Facilities include the Trafalgar Ballroom and a range of meeting and event spaces.

BWH Hotels GB has reported growth in its meetings and events and corporate segment. Group travel and event revenue increased by 11% year-on-year from 2025, supported by improved conversion rates and a focus on higher-yielding contracts.

Meeting and event revenue rose by 17%, with agent-driven business up 18% year-on-year, following the launch of the planners advantage programme.

David Knight, chief executive of BWH Hotels GB, said: “Following detailed consideration, it was clear that BWH Hotels GB was the perfect partner for the Royal Maritime Hotel. Being part of the BW Signature Collection allows us to showcase Portsmouth’s maritime heritage to a worldwide audience while continuing to deliver exceptional service with purpose.”

Nicola Wood-Hill, head of sales at BWH Hotels GB, added: “The Royal Maritime Hotel is the perfect example of the independent, heritage and boutique hotels we help thrive across our portfolio. It already has an established presence in meetings and events and the focus now is on ensuring that strength translates into consistent commercial performance, with the right support in place.

“We’ve already seen a strong response to the launch, with record bookings generated through our onboarding campaign and ‘Power of Two’ ethos.”

News Analysis

The Royal Maritime Hotel’s integration into BWH Hotels as part of the BW Signature Collection echoes the group’s previous success with independent properties. The recent boost experienced by the Clarence Gardens Hotel after joining BWH in March 2025 saw mid-week corporate occupancy leap 15% as a result of enhanced support and visibility within a competitive landscape highlighted in April 2026.

BWH Hotels has proven adept at revitalising heritage hotels while fostering their unique character. This duality is crucial; as seen in its growth trajectory, meetings and events revenue surged following the introduction of the Planners Advantage programme in early 2025, which bolstered bookings by 19% year-on-year despite broader industry downturns reported in July 2025.

With BWH’s ambition to expand its portfolio further, the Royal Maritime Hotel stands to significantly benefit from aligning with a brand that not only promises global distribution but has also demonstrated record revenue growth of 27% in event income this past year as noted in December 2025. The real test will be whether this partnership can consistently convert its rich heritage into substantial commercial performance.
