The Grand Hotel Birmingham has marked five years since reopening on Monday (18 May) following a £50m restoration that ended almost two decades of closure.
The Colmore Row hotel, which originally opened in 1879, features 185 bedrooms and a ballroom. Thomson Plevins designed the Grade II-listed building following the Second Birmingham Improvement Act of 1861.
Historically, the venue hosted high-profile guests including King George V, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.
The hotel currently employs several hundred staff, 13 of whom have worked at the venue since its reopening.
Management has introduced five cultural partnerships to mark the anniversary. Artworks by the Charles Pedone Art Collective will feature in guest suites from April to June.
Other scheduled collaborators for the year include the Birmingham Book Club, the Chocolate Quarter and Harvest Skincare.
The hotel also partnered with University College Birmingham for a student cocktail competition. Judges named a drink called Five Years In Bloom as the winner last week (13 May).
The restaurant, Isaac’s, is named after Isaac Horton, who originally developed the landmark. The hotel has also launched a late-night venue, Downstairs At The Grand, which hosts a phone-free event called Club 1879.
