The Kronen Collection has officially completed a multi-million-pound refurbishment of its boutique hotel portfolio and announced the appointment of Chris McLaughlin as its new chief executive officer.
The investment included the renovation of 66 bedrooms at The Kilbirnie Hotel in Newquay and works on the entrance and Waltons Bar at The Crown Hotel in Wetheral.
Further improvements were made to public areas and bedrooms at Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle and Borrowsdale Gates in Keswick.
According to the Kronen Collection, this project focused on asset quality and hotel individuality.
Following the refurbishments’ completions, the group also made several senior appointments to bolster further growth throughout 2026 along with McLaughlin’s promotion to CEO, following six years as general manager at The Crown Hotel and group operations director.
Christina Stephenson has also been appointed group sales and marketing manager, having previously spent 13 years at Jesmond Dene House, most recently as sales, marketing and events manager.
The group also promoted Javier Labbe as group accountant after serving as accounts manager at The Crown Hotel for the past two years.
In addition, Marlon Kagoro has been appointed hotel manager at The Crown Hotel. Kagoro previously held the roles of food and beverage manager and operations manager over a three-year period.
McLaughlin said: “Completing this level of investment across our portfolio while promoting experienced leaders from within the business gives us a strong platform for 2026.
“We are focused on long-term value creation, operational excellence and protecting the individual character of each of our hotels as we continue to grow.”

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
