A new boutique hotel has opened in central Florence, offering 14 suites within a restored 16th Century palazzo redesigned by fashion architect James Cavagnari.
The James Suite Hotel Firenze 1564 occupies Cavagnari’s childhood home. Built in 1564, the former convent retains original features including vaulted ceilings, an off-centre doorway, a secluded courtyard and restored marble floors.
Each suite combines antique and modern design, with vintage furnishings, contemporary artworks, and materials such as velvet and ceramics. Rooms offer views of the Florence skyline and are styled with fresh flowers, antique chandeliers and bespoke pieces.
The interiors include a mahogany mobile wardrobe once owned by Queen Elizabeth II, alongside a portrait of the late monarch. The designer’s English heritage is reflected throughout the property.
The hotel includes the 1564 Lounge Bar and the James Restaurant. The bar serves signature cocktails made with rare spirits and house infusions, while the restaurant offers Mediterranean-inspired dishes in a space designed with natural wood, brass accents and a multi-tiered pink chandelier.
Cavagnari, who was born in London and raised in Florence, has led over 200 design projects for brands including Salvatore Ferragamo and Bulgari. He described the hotel as his “most personal” project to date and said: “Every detail, from the textures to the proportions, is carefully curated.”
