Dalata opens zero-emission hotel at Croke Park

Dalata Hotel Group has opened the Maldron Hotel Croke Park, marking its 21st site in Dublin.

The development, completed with partners McAleer and Rushe, is located at the junction of Clonliffe Road and Jones’ Road directly opposite the national stadium.

The opening brings the Maldron brand portfolio to 27 hotels across Ireland and the UK, totaling 4,618 guest rooms.

The new property includes four meeting rooms, a fitness suite, and a restaurant, situated near Drumcondra and Connolly train stations.

The project is the first for the group to operate with zero on-site carbon emissions. Designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, the building features green roofs, air-source heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging points behind a red-brick façade.

Management reported that the 80 new staff members were selected from more than 5,000 applicants.

The workforce maintains a gender balance of 53% female and 47% male, with several management positions filled through the company’s internal academy.

The launch coincides with the start of the GAA Senior Championship. Dalata currently sponsors the GAA under-20 Football Championship as part of its ongoing partnership with the sporting organisation.

Dermot Crowley,  CEO of Dalata Hotel Group said: “Dublin remains an exceptionally strong and attractive hotel market, underpinned by continued economic growth, rising employment and growing business and leisure visitor numbers. The addition of this hotel represents another important step in Dalata’s continued growth journey.”

Seamus McAleer and Eamonn Laverty, chairman and chief executive of McAleer and Rushe, added: “This project builds on our long-standing partnership with Dalata and adds to our portfolio of more than 3,000 hotel bedrooms delivered for the group across the UK and Ireland. We look forward to seeing the hotel play an important role in the local area.”

News Analysis

The opening of the Maldron Hotel Croke Park in October 2023 not only underscores Dalata’s expansion in Dublin but also reflects a broader shift in the hospitality industry towards sustainability. This follows a significant construction milestone for the hotel in May 2025, which was celebrated by stakeholders, including McAleer & Rushe and the GAA when the topping out was achieved.

Dalata’s rising commitment to sustainability echoes its previous moves, such as the opening of the Maldron Hotel Merrion Road in October 2022, where the CEO expressed the group’s intention to embed environmentally-friendly practices in its operations. By achieving BREEAM ratings in new developments, the group has positioned itself as a proactive player in the environmentally aware sector of hospitality, as noted when the Merrion Road hotel was launched.

Recently, the company reported growing revenues, confirmed by the surge of 9% in 2022, indicating that the approach towards eco-friendliness resonates positively with their financial health as seen in their mid-year financial results.
