Uzbekistan Airways has confirmed an order for 14 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with options for an additional eight, as part of its fleet modernization strategy. This order represents the largest single purchase by the airline to date. The announcement was made during the United Nations General Assembly, with participation from representatives of Boeing and Uzbekistan Airways, as well as the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The acquisition aims to update Uzbekistan Airways’ widebody fleet and support its long-haul operations. The airline currently operates 787-8 models, which serve routes connecting Europe, Asia, and the United States, including a direct service to New York City. The introduction of the 787-9 is expected to enhance the airline’s capacity and range, facilitating the expansion of international routes, particularly to the U.S. and other long-haul destinations.
In addition to the aircraft order, Boeing and the Uzbekistan Ministry of Transport signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to explore further development of the country’s aviation sector. This agreement aims to identify opportunities to enhance Uzbekistan’s position as an aviation hub in Central Asia.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is noted for its fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, which are expected to support Uzbekistan Airways’ growth strategy by enabling the airline to open new routes and serve additional destinations. The 787’s design features, including advanced aerodynamics and composite materials, contribute to a 25% reduction in fuel use compared to the aircraft it replaces.
