Zedwell has announced it will convert York’s 48 Coney Street into a new automated hotel, reflecting its continued commitment to expand across the popular visitor destinations in the UK.
The budget hotel brand said the development will transform the property into a hotel fit for “modern travellers” while also preserving its character, partly distinguished by its Grade II-listed mock-Tudor façade.
Dating back to 1907, the building finds itself in the city’s mediaeval core near landmarks such as York Minster, the Shambles and the River Ouse.
Offering fully automated guest journeys, Zedwell’s hotels include self check-in kiosks, digital key access and 24/7 AI-powered WhatsApp assistance.
This news follows Zedwell’s recent expansion into Oxford with a hotel in Oxenford House, a six-storey building located between Cornmarket Street and George Street.
The brand has also transformed the Trocadero in London’s West End, formerly an indoor theme park, into its London flagship, and repurposed a disused subterranean car park on Tottenham Court Road into England’s first underground hotel.
Commenting on the company’s York launch, Halima Aziz, head of hotels at Zedwell, said: “York is one of the UK’s most historic cities and a powerhouse for tourism, welcoming millions of visitors every year. It is an exceptional location for the next stage of Zedwell’s growth as we expand into destinations with strong and enduring visitor demand.
“With a current and committed pipeline of 9,000 rooms by 2028, York represents another important milestone in our strategy to build a scalable platform in high-demand gateway cities. Projects like this show how heritage buildings can be thoughtfully reimagined for contemporary audiences while preserving the character that makes these cities so special.”

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
