Whitbread commits to 500 care leaver jobs a year

Whitbread has announced plans to provide employment for more than 500 care-experienced young people each year by 2027.

The hospitality group, which operates Premier Inn, intends to reach this target through a combination of organic recruitment and a structured partnership with the charity Barnardo’s.

As part of the initiative, Whitbread has signed the Care Leaver Covenant, a national commitment to support people leaving the care system.

The company will offer roles across its hotels and restaurants in housekeeping, kitchens, and management, alongside work experience placements.

The partnership currently operates in Glasgow, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, with expansion planned for Swansea, Newcastle upon Tyne, and other UK locations.

Participants undergo an eight-week programme focused on employability skills, including customer service and interview practice, supported by Barnardo’s youth workers.

To date, 18 young people have secured permanent positions through the scheme, following an initial pilot that supported more than 35 participants.

Rachel Howarth, chief people officer for Whitbread, said: “As an inclusive employer, we welcome people from all backgrounds and experience. All too often those who are care experienced face barriers that others may not and we’re here to say there is a place here for you and no limits to your ambition if you’d like to work for us. We’re delighted to join forces with Barnardo’s and so proud of the young people who have taken part in the programme so far.”

Tommy McDade, Barnardo’s UK head of business for employment, training and skills, added: “Care-experienced young people are disproportionately likely to be out of employment, education, or training compared to other groups. That’s why we’re partnering with Whitbread to create more employment opportunities. The commitment from Whitbread has already made an impact on many lives, and we’re excited to help them achieve their ambition of employing 500 young people a year.”

Warren, a care-experienced apprentice in the housekeeping and maintenance team, said: “During my work experience, I got to try every role. I really enjoyed the maintenance role, you spend a lot of time fixing things, and I like that. The management team has been really good at helping me with my training.”
