Studio Moren has completed the transformation of three adjoining Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury into Bertrand’s Townhouse, a 43‑room boutique hotel for SAV Group.
The development transforms the three historic buildings in Bloomsbury into a boutique hotel, with the property named after the 3rd Earl Russell, the intellectual and writer Bertrand Russell.
Designers from Studio Moren have styled the interiors to reference the Bloomsbury Set, a group of early 20th Century artists and writers who lived in the area.
The hotel features a colour palette of ochre, red and indigo throughout its design. Its Classic and Deluxe rooms feature “soft neutrals, tactile materials and quietly detailed joinery”, while Grand rooms and Junior Suites have a “richer palette of paprika tones, expressive trims and curated furnishings”.
The 43 bedrooms include heritage fixtures such as original cornicing and decorative fireplaces alongside modern furnishings. Broadleaf timber flooring, Chelsom lighting and Ege carpets are used throughout, alongside Kohler brassware within the bathrooms.
The site includes a restaurant and bar named Ottie’s Salon and an outdoor terrace called The Cigar Garden.
Sustainable features include air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels, which Studio Moren said will help reduce both operational costs and environmental impact.
David Harte, partner and head of Interior Design at Studio Moren, said: “The design of Bertrand’s Townhouse is grounded in an understanding of the building’s architecture and its original townhouse proportions. Our approach centred on craft, materiality and spatial flow, creating interiors that feel intimate and considered. The townhouse typology offered a robust framework, allowing the design to respond directly to the building’s existing character.”
Mark Wood, partner at Studio Moren, added: “Working with historic buildings demands more than preservation alone. At Bertrand’s Townhouse, we balanced careful restoration with targeted, low-impact interventions – from discreet rear extensions to a tailored suite of energy-efficient technologies – ensuring the building performs responsibly while remaining unmistakably Bloomsbury in character.”
Emilios Tsavellas, development director at SAV Group, said: “We were impressed by Studio Moren’s creativity across both the architectural response and interior design. From planning through to execution, the team demonstrated exceptional skill and a thoughtful approach to the inherent challenges of working with listed building”
