Kirklees Council has announced that work on the Grade II listed George Hotel will accelerate next month as construction teams begin dismantling the west side of the building.
The project will create 108 hotel rooms, a bar, restaurant, gym, and conference facilities.
The building will be managed by Radisson Hotel Group and is scheduled to become the first Radisson Red in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Revised plans approved in October 2025 include the preservation of the historic stone front and the addition of two storeys of accommodation set back from the original frontage.
Scaffolding is due to be erected in this month, with a dedicated construction compound established in St George’s Square from March 2026.
The hotel renovation is a central element of the Huddersfield Blueprint town centre regeneration scheme.
The project coincides with wider investment in the town, including the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the first phase of the Huddersfield Rail Station Connection scheme.
This separate infrastructure work will focus on Northumberland Street, Trinity Street, and St John’s Road.
Graham Turner, Cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: “The transformation of the George Hotel is one of the major projects of the Huddersfield Blueprint and regenerating the town centre. It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated, can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay.
“We want to proudly celebrate our town’s rich history and will soon want people to help create the look and feel of the building, so it represents our heritage, identity and character that makes our community unique.”
Adela Cristea, chief development officer for the UK, Ireland and Nordics at Radisson Hotel Group, said: “It’s fantastic to see work progress on this historic building, the hotel is rich in history and heritage and one of Huddersfield’s most iconic landmarks. Once construction is complete, we’re looking forward to introducing the signature bold, vibrant style of our Radisson RED brand.”
Ed Weston, regional director for Yorkshire at GMI Construction, added: “As a Yorkshire company, we are proud to be delivering this landmark project that will restore an important part of Huddersfield’s heritage while supporting long-term economic growth and community revitalisation.”
