Code, a provider of boutique hotels and urban hostels, has reopened The Loft on Rose Street, Edinburgh, following an extensive refurbishment.
The project introduces the UK’s first full-height Japanese-style capsule beds, a design developed after a 2025 research trip to Tokyo by the company’s management team.
The update includes a new four-bed female-only penthouse dorm with access to a private roof terrace.
The full-height capsules function as micro-rooms, featuring acoustic insulation, adjustable extraction fans for airflow, and custom mattresses made from natural materials.
Each unit is equipped with integrated technology, including phone holders, UK three-pin sockets, and USB/USB-C charging ports.
Storage features include secure digital lockers and underbed compartments with internal lighting.
The wider renovation, led by head of projects and design Jamie Greig and interior designer Pamela Mackay, included a refresh of all existing dorms and the modernisation of bathroom facilities.
The building also features updated exterior signage following the brand’s 2025 identity refresh. Code currently operates two locations in Edinburgh: The Loft and The Court.
Andrew Landsburgh, managing director of Code, said: “Visiting Tokyo’s capsule hotels was transformative. We loved the feeling of the full-height capsules; it was like having your own small room, private and peaceful, without sacrificing quality or comfort. That trip made it clear that we could bring something truly special back to Edinburgh.”
Jamie Greig, head of projects and design at Code, added: “Every detail came from real experience, staying in capsules of every shape and size over the years. From the acoustic insulation to the storage lighting, to the custom mattress and the extra hooks, it’s all about making travel feel easier, calmer and more personal.”

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
