Castlebridge Hospitality’s Hotel Indigo hotels in Coventry and Stratford-upon-Avon have been awarded Green Key certification following an assessment of their environmental impact.
This is the first year both Hotel Indigo sites have received the accreditation, which is managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
The certification requires businesses to meet 130 criteria across 13 categories to demonstrate sustainable operations. More than 4,000 establishments in 60 countries currently hold the award, which is recognised by the World Tourism Organisation and UN Environment Programme.
Both hotels established internal teams to implement initiatives aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of their daily operations. Each application was reviewed by an independent panel before the status was granted.
Group operations manager at Castlebridge Hospitality, Scott Rankin, said: “We’re delighted that both hotels have been accredited with the Green Key. We believe in providing exceptional service to our guests, but also in a way that minimises our impact on the environment. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the environment and create a brighter future for generations to come. This is the first step in not only reducing our carbon footprint but encouraging our guests to make more sustainable choices.”
To mark the accreditation, 100 trees will be planted in Kenya as part of a project by Mission Net Zero. Experts estimate these trees will capture 181 tonnes of carbon dioxide over their lifetime.
Chief operating officer from Mission Net Zero, Jane Kendrick, added: “Huge congratulations go to both hotels for achieving their Year One Green Key England certification, which is a fantastic achievement. Gaining Green Key in their first year is no small feat and reflects the hard work, commitment, and collaboration across the whole team. It is a strong demonstration of their dedication to sustainability and continuous improvement, and a brilliant foundation to build on in the years ahead.”
