Owners of the Stradey Park Hotel have closed the property with immediate effect, leading Carmarthenshire County Council to seek assurances regarding the building’s future use.
The local authority confirmed it has no plans to procure the site and has received no proposals from third-party organisations.
Following discussions with the Home Office, Nia Griffith MP provided assurance to the council that the building is not being considered for temporary housing or asylum seeker accommodation.
This follows previous community concerns regarding the potential use of the hotel for such purposes.
The council has initiated contact with hotel staff to provide employability support and redundancy advice.
Officers from the local authority will remain in communication with the affected workforce throughout the transition.
The council has not yet disclosed any information regarding the long-term commercial plans of the hotel’s private owners or potential liquidation proceedings.
Cllr Linda Evans, leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, said: “It’s disappointing to learn that the owners of the Stradey Park Hotel have decided to close the hotel in such sudden fashion. Our priority is to the staff who are directly affected by this development, and our officers are in direct contact with them to support them during what must be a difficult and worrying time.”
Cllrs Martyn Palfreman and Edward Skinner added: “We are grateful to the county council for putting measures in place to help staff affected by this sudden announcement. We are also heartened to have received assurance from the UK Government that they will not be using the Stradey Park Hotel to house asylum seekers. This should provide reassurance across the community.”
