Sloane Club unveils major refurb of its Chelsea site

The Sloane Club has completed a refurbishment of its premises in Chelsea, updating a number of internal and external areas while retaining the building’s historic character.

The project was delivered by Derby-based architects Morrison Design and led by Peter Newman-Earp and Les Witten. The works focused on improving circulation, accessibility and year-round use across both public and private areas of the club.

The terrace was a key element of the refurbishment. Previously operating largely as a courtyard and limited to use in good weather, the space has been adapted for year-round use and to accommodate an expanded food and beverage operation.

The terrace is now used throughout the day by members for a range of functions.

Front-of-house areas are reconfigured to improve circulation and arrival routes, while retaining smaller spaces within the building.

The refurbishment also includes the addition of a wellness suite with a gym and treatment rooms, improved accessibility through new lifts and revised bedroom layouts. The club operates 64 guest bedrooms, five bar and restaurant areas and three private dining rooms.

The works were carried out within a 19th Century building located in a conservation area, with the club remaining operational throughout the construction period.

Construction began in January 2024 and was completed in December 2025. The contractor was 3 Interiors.

Interior design was provided by Russell Sage, with mechanical and electrical consultancy from Thornley Lumb and structural and civil engineering by Axiom Structures.

Newman-Earp said: “Our challenge was to create an all-year-round space that felt airy, light, and inviting. Expanding the food and beverage offering was a welcome bonus. The whole Club feels more atmospheric and theatrical. Everything has fallen into place beautifully.”

Witten added: “The client wanted a space that feels fresh and modern but still rooted in its history. A key focus was the terrace, previously little more than a courtyard with awnings, usable only in good weather.

“We wanted to maximise the open space and create something timeless, with clean, uncluttered lines. The structure dictated a lot of the architecture – it was a challenging space but the result feels effortless.”

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
