Plans for a Universal-branded theme park and resort in Bedford have been granted planning permission following approval from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The development will proceed through a Special Development Order, a mechanism that allows planning permission to be granted directly by ministers.
The decision is subject to a statutory parliamentary review period and further procedural steps.
If completed, the scheme would become the first Universal-branded theme park and resort in the UK and Europe.
The project is expected to generate significant economic benefits, with estimates of up to £50bn in direct and indirect impact on the UK economy.
The development is also expected to create around 20,000 construction jobs and approximately 8,000 permanent roles once operational, with the majority of positions expected to be filled by local workers.
The scheme would also support the UK’s tourism and creative industries and position Bedford as a major visitor destination.
Additionally, the development is also expected to deliver transport improvements, including the expansion of Wixams railway station and new direct slip roads connecting the site to the A421.
